Support → Network support → Windows → Maintenance
Regular maintenance is an important aspect of computer and network system problem prevention. By ensuring that key software is running correctly, securely, and is up-to-date, and that the hardware is working cleanly and efficiently, most problems that effect productivity can be prevented.
The two most common problems include virus or SpyWare infections that interfere with computer use or violate privacy, and failing components or dust build-up that cause a computer to stop working altogether. There are many possible causes of technical problems that can be prevented with regular on-site maintenance.
Preventive maintenance tasks typically include:
- Checking anti-virus and anti-SpyWare tools (funtionality, updates, and log files)
- Testing backups (includes restoring a few files and checking them)
- Installing any missing Operating System updates (some require manual intervention)
- Updating hardware drivers (especially for video which can be closely tied to performance)
- Updating applications (e.g., MS-Office, OpenOffice, Google Earth, Opera, Firefox, PDF Creator, etc.)
- Checking network cables (can be a nuisance when failing because the symptoms are not always obvious)
- Updating various other equipment firmware (e.g,. internet routers, printers, video cameras, etc.)
- Removing dust and checking fans (dust build-up can limit the effectiveness of cooling)
Since the installation of software updates (which often improve security or performance) can't be completely automated, manual updates are also performed for certain important applications.
If it appears that some major equipment may fail in the near future, we inform and provide an estimate of the replacement/upgrade cost before proceeding (this is important for budgeting purposes), unless automatic replacement was pre-authorized as part of the maintenance schedule. Normally inexpensive items such as fans, keyboards, mice, various cables, etc., are replaced immediately.
