Virtualization is a fairly new technology that is the next frontier in multi-process computing.  But it elevates multi-process to running multiple parallel instances of entire Operating Systems in isolation under a single computing system, and with new features like snapshots and rollbacks which are particularly useful for testing updates and other significant system modifications.  Add to that the power of distribution across multiple virtualization hosts, and processing and memory resources can be utilized across a network to gain benefits that were previously only partially available in Unix and mainframe environments.
